Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Join the San Luis Rey Band of Luise?o Mission Indians for the Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow with arts and craft booths, food, dancers, drums, an opportunity drawing and contest dancing.

Presented free to the public by the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation, the 23rd Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow will feature parades, dancing, drumming, storytelling, arts and crafts and food for sale. The Inter-Tribal Powwow is one of the largest in the region, and it is the only one presented on the grounds of a California mission. It draws participant from 15+ tribes, including the Diegue?o tribe and Luise?o bands in San Diego County, as well as tribes from California, the Southwest and beyond.

The highlight of the powwow is the Grand Entry (staged at noon, 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM Saturday and at noon Sunday), in which dancers in traditional native dress enter the grounds in a parade formation. No pictures are allowed during the sacred entry, but the public is encouraged to join the parade by drumming, dancing and marching.

Throughout each day, men, women and youth dancers will participate in intertribal competition dancing (fancy shawl, jingle, grass, hoop and traditional styles) and drumming. Vendors will sell Indian arts and crafts, and food booths will sell burgers, hot dogs, Indian tacos, and fry bread.
