We will take you on a personalized tour of the biggest outdoor art museum in the country by one of its founders, artist Mario Torero. We will transport you by passenger van or meet you at the park.
Mario himself will take you on the tour of his and other colorful murals, decorated pylons and historic paintings of the Coronado Bridge collectively referred to as Chicano Park. You will learn the history of the Spanish colonization of San Diego including facts about the Kumeyaay tribe. Chicano Park is the birthplace of Chicano Civil Rights where the local community blocked the construction of a police station in the middle of the barrio. Murals illustrate this struggle to affirm the Chicano culture in San Diego.
Guests will tour the numerous murals just off the Ceasar Chavez Avenue, ask questions of the artists and learn the little known local history of the Chicano movement that changed America in the early '70s. You will be invited for a Mexican Chocolate with your guides at the Por Vida cafe in the heart of Logan. Then either return to the house or discover the hidden galleries of Logan's oft-overlooked local arts district. Where art prints and souvenirs are for sale.
This is a unique experience of living art history, of recalling the Chicano civil rights movement and of understanding how a culture uses visual narrative to assert and preserve its identity.
