In this lecture, after presenting a brief history of Kashmir, Professor Gupta will examine the dynamics that keep the Kashmir conflict alive: First, examining how it is the outcome of Pakistan's total obsession with acquiring the Muslim-majority state and, second, examining how the partition in the sub-continent resulted from Jinnah's ""two-nation theory"" -- that the Hindus and Muslims cannot live together and must have two separate countries. Jinnah's theory was rejected by Gandhi and Nehru, who made India a secular nation. The nation of Pakistan was created and Jinnah (QUAID-I-AZAM MOHAMMAD ALI JINNAH ) became its first President. However, currently, Hindu nationalists are reaffirming the ""two-nation"" theory, elevating it to prominence. On the basis of this thesis on the history of the region, Professor Gupta will attempt to look into the future of the seven-decades long conflict.
