Many of us would rather not think about the way income is divided as long we feel we are getting our fair share. But what if there were mechanisms to increase access to better incomes? Or better understand how policies prevent or enable your ability to accumulate wealth here in the US? Especially now, in such uncertain times, how has the pandemic impacted income inequality?
This event is moderated by League member Joni Halpern, who has served low-income families and individuals throughout San Diego County as a staff lawyer for the ACLU, the Legal Aid Society, director of a grassroots nonprofit, and now as a sole practitioner.
Featured speakers include:
*Michael Hiltzik Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author for the LA Times. Michael?s latest book is Iron Empires: Robber Barons, Railroads, and the Making of Modern America, covers the nation?s history during the Gilded Age of the last 19 th Century.
*Tess Thorman A research associate at the Public Policy Institute of California, where she studies poverty, inequality, and the social safety net. Recent projects have also focused on California?s stake in the 2020 Census. PPIC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank dedicated to informing and improving public policy in California through independent, objective, nonpartisan research.
*William T. Oswald, Ph.D. Associate Executive Director of the Global Action Research Center that serves as an intermediary between universities and communities to identify community problems and co-create solutions. His work is focused on supporting communities in finding their voice, becoming civically engaged, and inserting that voice into the public dialogue
