Our expert panelists will discuss the tragic history of AAPI discrimination in America, focusing on the intersectionality of misogyny and racism among AAPI women. Learn about how our local Asian business community fared over the past year while national figures spewed dangerous and racially motivated rhetoric to scapegoat Asian Americans. Most importantly, learn what you can do to support AAPI businesses and embrace the entire community during AAPI Heritage Month in May.

Come join us for an evening with Professor Dayo Gore who will speak on her book, Radicalism at the Crossroads.

Dayo F. Gore is an associate professor of ethnic studies and critical gender studies at the University of California, San Diego. She is the co-editor (with Jeanne Theoharis and Komozi Woodard) of Want to Start a Revolution? Radical Women in the Black Freedom Struggle (NYU Press, 2009).

In this presentation, Professor Gore will discuss Black women radicals mentioned in her latest book, Radicalism at the Crossroads: African American Women Activists in the Cold War. the event is part of a webinar series co-sponsored by the Claudia Jones School for Political Education, Black Women Radicals, and the Paul Robeson House & Museum.

Design@Large is a speaker series that is hosted by the Design Lab at UCSD, where each quarter we examine a topic in society and the relevance and implications through the lens of human centered design.

Co-hosted by Elizabeth Eikey and Edward Wang and developed in partnership with Carrie Sawyer of Diversity by Design, Design@Large this quarter is a continuation of Winter 2021. the focus is racism in the design of everyday things across a range of topics, such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, advertising, and more. Talks will help shed light on the historical context of racism, the consequences of “designing” without understanding racism’s deep roots, and provide examples of anti-racist and equitable approaches in practice. Too often we want to jump straight to action, but without building our capacity to understand racism (and other “isms”) and critically evaluating its impact, we perpetuate racism and inequity - even with the best intentions. Through an exciting lineup of speakers, this series begins to make connections between history and designing and aims to promote awareness around the lifelong practice of anti-racist work across a variety of interconnected domains.

Foreign Language Film Night Series will screen the following films for the general public in The Languages of SoCal mini-series. Each film will be followed by a discussion with a San Diego university/college faculty and a neighbor about cultural aspects of the film and their immigrant experiences. The discussion will last about 30 minutes and include a Q&A open to all participants.

Love is War - In this Nigerian comedy, sparks fly as a husband and wife both win the nominations as the candidates of the two major parties in an upcoming gubernatorial election. Will their marriage survive this unprecedented event?
Niyi Coker, director of the School of Theater, Television, and Film at SDSU, and Ihuoma Nwaogwugwu, competency engineer for 3D printing at HP, and lead actor Richard Mofe-Damijo.

April 28 -
Innocence Based on a real-life story, this South Korean film focuses on Ahn Jung-in (Shin Hye-sun), a lawyer who decides to defend her mother after she is wrongly accused of killing someone at her husband's funeral.
