Among the other artifacts recovered from Pompeii, archaeologists have uncovered carbonized remains of various species of plants, several of which are described in works by Pliny the Elder and other contemporary writers as being used medicinally by the local people. Many of the plants are still used today by the local residents, and are also familiar to us in San Diego, since we share the Mediterranean climate found in this part of Italy. Come take a close look at some early herbals, view works by Pliny, and see other treasures from the Research Library?s Rare Book room. Also see local live plants that have been documented as having grown in Pompeian gardens as well as herbarium specimens from the Museum?s Botany Department.
