Lives of Indigenous Mexican Farm Workers in California

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Living Under the Trees is a compelling photography exhibition by artist/activist David Bacon. It is comprised of a series of large color photographs that document the daily experiences of indigenous Mexican farm workers in California. The exhibit includes text panels of oral histories: giving voices to migrants who talk about their lives and their struggles. The pictures also attest to their ability to survive under difficult circumstances and to enjoy life in spite of them.

The digital color images depict the harsh conditions for newly arrived migrants where families struggle with inadequate housing and impossible working conditions. But they also demonstrate that these communities are developing a vibrant culture of music, dance, food and healthcare. This exhibit hopes to bring public support for these communities and lead to improved policies. It provides a forum in which people speak for themselves and focuses especially on indigenous social movements.
