San Diego State University???s Department of Special Collections and University Archives is opening a new exhibit on the archaeology of local legend Nate Harrison. Dr. Seth Mallios, professor of Anthropology at SDSU and Director of the Nate Harrison Historical Archaeology project, will give a free lecture in room LL430 of the library on Sept. 15 at 4:00 PM to kick off the exhibit opening. The exhibit, entitled, ???The Archaeology of Nate Harrison: Legacies and Legends of an African-American Pioneer in San Diego County,??? will run from September 15, 2008 to January 15, 2009.
The legend of Nate Harrison looms large in San Diego County. Mythical stories abound of the region???s first African-American homesteader, this former slave from the South who lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries atop Palomar Mountain. The tall tales have grown over time; each subsequent generation adds to Harrison???s larger-than-life status as mountain man, pioneer, and emancipated slave.
