A Vaisaki Celebration featuring: Punjabi foods a fashion show, cultural program, merchandise for sale as well as Giddha and Bhangra folk music and dancing.
Vaisaki is an ancient harvest festival celebrated by Sikhs. It is one of the most important and colorful events celebrated by Sikhs and falls every year on May 14th. Originally a harvest festival, it took on new meaning in the 17th century with the founding of the Kalsa order of Sikhs, which eventually embraced a majority of Sikhs. Kalsa refers to Sikhs who have been baptised and who steadfastly observed the "five Ks" (5 kakaars), which are: 1.kesh uncut hair 2. kanga carrying a wooden comb 3. kara the wearing of an iron bracelet 4. kachera a specific style of white cotton undergarmet 5. kirpan a curved dagger to defend those. The five Ks are emblematic of being a Sikh to the men who wear these items, however, not all Sikhs are Kalsa and therefore not all Sikhs follow these prescriptions.
