Join us for a conversation unpacking India's new Code on Social Security, 2020, its impact on gig and platform work, and what this landmark policy means in practice. The new framework took effect in November 2025, formally extending labor protections to gig and platform workers for the first time. Key changes include Aadhaar-linked IDs, portable benefits, and mandatory aggregator contributions to a social security fund. The discussion will examine the policy’s implications for India’s rapidly growing gig economy: Can meaningful social protection be provided without undermining platform flexibility? Will the cost of compliance affect the sector’s ability to scale, and ultimately, who will bear that cost? Arti Ahuja, former Union labor secretary when the code was proposed, will offer an inside perspective on how the policy took shape, while Prajna Khanna will bring an investor’s perspective on India’s gig economy and its evolving policy landscape. The discussion will be moderated by professor Achyuta Adhvaryu from the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy.
