Formed in Tokyo in 1978, Yellow Magic Orchestra seized upon rapidly evolving electronic technology to open up new possibilities for popular music. Synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines, samplers, and computers met pop melody, funk, disco, exotica, and irreverent humor to create a sound—and a world—entirely their own. The reverberations were enormous. YMO’s music would prove foundational to synth-pop, electro, hip-hop, techno, house, video game music, and countless strains of electronic music that followed, while Hosono, Sakamoto, and Takahashi each pursued remarkably diverse creative lives far beyond the group itself. Nearly half a century later, YMO’s music still feels startlingly alive: playful and sophisticated, futuristic and human.
