From South America to Japan, Ireland to Hawaii, Carlsbad will be awash in culture from across the globe for seven days starting Saturday. The 14th Carlsbad Multicultural Arts Festival will bring in music, dance and stories from a variety of different countries in a series of free, family-friendly performances. This event runs March 3-9.
The festival kicks off Saturday at the Cole Library (1250 Carlsbad Village Drive) with Puppets Around the World at 11:00 AM, a participatory art project at noon, and Nancy St. John's Travels With Music at 1:00 PM The next day, March 4, the Festival continues at the City Library (1775 Dove Lane) with the Pualana Hawaiian Dancers at 2:00 PM and the Japanese Music Trio at 3.
At 3:30 PM March 5, the Museum of Making Music is presenting a teen drum circle in the Schulman Auditorium at the City Library. March 7 finds the Festival back at the Cole Library for Japan in a Suitcase, an after-school program the public is welcome to attend. Drum Carnivale, a performance of Brazilian and Cuban music, is set for 9:00 AM March 7, with Peter McBride performing folk songs and telling folk tales at 10 AM ---- both events at the Harding Community Center (3096 Harding St.). Carlsbad High is the site for the activities on March 8: a 9:00 AM performance of Honey Bo and the Gold Mine produced by the La Jolla Playhouse, and Arbor Azul performing a selection of Latin American music at 10 AM At 3:30 that afternoon, Suni Paz will present a program of international stories and songs at the Centro de Informacion at 3333 Harding St.
Finally, on March 9, puppeteer Kathy Felker will present Once Upon a Shamrock at 10 and 11:00 AM at the City Library.
