Creating Community: African Americans in San Diego

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
The San Diego State University Library opens its newest exhibit, “Creating Community: African Americans in San Diego,” in the library’s Donor Hall on January 22. “Creating Community” celebrates San Diego’s African American history by drawing upon archival collections from the library’s Special Collections and University Archives Department. The exhibit, which runs through June 15, is sponsored by a generous grant from the President's Leadership Fund.

Through photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, letters, legal documents, and brochures, “Creating Community” illustrates how San Diego’s African Americans transitioned from being a small group of geographically scattered individuals and families to the thriving community found today. Various aspects of “community” are explored, such as education, culture, and business and economics.
