In Japanese aesthetics, between the gorgeous and the dull lies a territory of perfect, restrained elegance called shibumi (in adverb form: shibui). Hollis Goodall, curator of Japanese art at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, considers concept of shibumi within context of aesthetic concepts traditionally practiced by Japanese artists. History of shibumi and its precursors as they evolved in Japanese art will also be discussed.
