El Maiz es Nuestra Vida (Maize Is Our Life) is a nomadic exhibition of contemporary art that fosters an understanding of the science and business behind transgenic plants and their effects on traditional agricultural practices and biodiversity. Marietta Bersntorff, a curator from Oaxaca, formed the MAMAZ artist collective and organized the first El Maiz exhibition. The show was seen by thousands of people at the Museum of Natural History in Mexico City in 2008 and, in March, it was on exhibit at the Havana Biennial, in Cuba. The multiplicity of visions and voices on view generate a dialogue about corn and globalization. For MAMAZ info visit www.oaxacacorn.pbworks.com
In the San Diego exhibition of El Maiz es Nuestra Vida at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park, we are pleased to present video, sculpture, music and photographic works from previous MAMAZ exhibits and new artistic visions by California artists. Judith F. Baca's corn goddess commands the space as magical sculptures of mutating maize by Stephanie Bedwell populate the room; calligraphic drawings by Becky Guttin give a lyrical quality to lifein the fields while Laura Alvarez' Detective Agent Sirvienta sheds light on theHouse of Monsanto of the Future, a fanciful display in a Disneyland of the past. Young artists Favianna Rodriguez and Iris Alvarez imbue political images of agricultural reclamation with a hip-hop vibe. Alessandra Moctezuma, gallery director at San Diego Mesa College, curated this exhibit.
El Maiz es Nuestra Vida includes La Bolsa del Mercado (The Shopping Bag) a collection of art-objects brought together by Marietta Bernstorff. Women artists following in the tradition of popular culture have created craft pieces, rap music, jewelry and bags. Workshops are offered at each venue, where local curators, artists and activists get informed and generate new products. The Centro will host a workshop on Saturday, June 13, 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
