18th Annual Kuumba Fest

The 18th annual Kuumba Fest promises "positive cultural images, healthy challenges, and spiritual rejuvenation." Events begin on Friday with traditional ceremonial pre-fest opening in the courtyard with vendors, fashion, cultural art, music, food, drumming, dance, libations. "Royal Court" begins at 7:30 with parade of history, warrior kings, queens and ancient pharaohs. Also on tap: the play Black at the Gate.

Saturday promises opening of marketplace (11 AM), educational workshops (Noon), youth play (1 PM), dance and step showcase (3 PM),
"Late Nite Live" (9 PM), more.

Marketplace opens at 1pm on Sunday, with "The Living Truth" biographical monologues (3:30 PM), cooking demonstrations (4 PM), gospel event (7 PM), more.

1:OO PM "It Only Take One Time" a youth play examining strategies in becoming great. Creatively looking at the importance of social, health and urban survival skills. Written and Directed by Dajahn Blevins. Music by Rene Flenoid and MADA School of Music ($5)
2:30 Speech Competition: What does it mean to be healthy active and fit as an African-American person. (Extemporaneous Speech Competition on the Underground stage. Hosted by R. Muhammad (Free)
3:00 Step N Music Showcase and competition "Calling on the Greatest": A step team contest dance showcase and greatest of the great freestyle dance battle. Coordinated by Shanna Cofield and Stay Entertainment ($ 15)
4:00 Taste of Soul. This cook-off features the greatest In cooking and eating featuring top Soul Food or urban cultural cuisine establishments in San Diego. Samples of dishes from top cooks, caterers and chefs will be on display. Who's the greatest In preparing healthy soulful food and ethnic delicacies in San Diego? Coordinated by Alesia Rhodes and Lylone Cooks ($7)
6:00 PM Royal Style: Fashion Show & Hair Salon Battle Your Honor Productions presents. VHP brings you the hottest In fashion design and the best In African-American hair care, product, and styling. This event will also showcase the best resources in San Diego for the total body from grooming, fitness and health care products. Coordinated by Tina Mane Honor and Chondra Profit ($15)
9:00 "Late Night Live" This is a night of the greatest performers in San Diego attempting to show the right combination of personality, style, swagger in this Apollo theater style talent competition. Hosted by Gullian "G' Bwinika, Coordinated by: Saleem Yeaitjin & James Wiley Jr ($20)
