Raku Pottery Workshop

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar

Spend day with artist Rae Barney, learning about "the Westernized Japanese art of raku," the "dynamic ceramic firing process producing spectacular finishes." Participants need to bring two or three pieces to fire. Barney studied raku, saggar, and pit fire techniques under Rico Piper, renowned potter and raku master.

Raku is a firing technique founded in Japan and once used in making ceremonial tea cups. Since, artists have modernized this slam dunk form of firing clay to produce striking pieces of art. This style of firing can produce a rainbow of iridescent and metallic lusters, classic white crackle with black carbon highlights, or satin color flashes. Instant gratification with amazing and spectacular results.
