SFS was established in 2000 to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services to the San Diego Somali and other East African refugees, easing their transition and ensuring successful functioning in their new home. Current SFS programs include Health Services, Economic Development, Youth Mentorship, Family Strengthening, Leadership/Advocacy Training, Project Refuge, providing temporary housing for individuals who suffered extreme torture in their homelands and Taxan, the only bilingual newsletter in Southern California.
The Health Fair will kick off with a 2K fun walk at 10 AM promoting senior fitness and refugee awareness. "This year's Health Fair is bringing healthcare providers, community agencies, elected officials and residents together to promote greater access to quality health care, and to build bridges between the refugee community and the community at large," said Ahmed Sahid, President/CEO of SFS. The Health Fair will feature greetings from 53rd District Congresswoman Susan Davis, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Fourth District County Supervisor Ron Roberts and District 3 City Councilmember Todd Gloria. The keynote speaker will be Karma Bass, president of Alliance Healthcare Foundation. Additional speakers include Bob Montgomery of International Rescue Committee, Ralph Achenbach of the San Diego Refugee Forum, Barbara Jimenez from First 5 San Diego and Diana Ross of Mid-City CAN. The emcees will be SFS Board members Jesse Mills and Abdi Mohamoud. All attendees will have access to cultural food, entertainment and a DJ. Healthcare providers, refugee and other organizations with educational booths will include Sharp Healthcare, County of San Diego Central Region Public Health, American Civil Liberties Union, Union of Pan Asian Communities, United Nations Association San Diego, Alternative Healing Network, Mental Health America, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, American Red Cross, Community Health Group, International Rescue Committee, Horn of Africa Community, Jewish Family Service and others.
