The story of local Chicana feminist activism in the 1960s and 1970s is one of the central features of an archive at San Diego State University.
The exhibit "Unidos por la Causa: The Chicano Experience in San Diego" was put together over four years by a committee composed of community activists, students, faculty and library administrators. The exhibit is a display of photos, art and documents recounting the Latino civil rights movement in the San Diego region. It is housed in the university?s Malcolm Love Library. In addition to displays on Chicana feminism, one of the more dramatic elements, organizers said, is a collection of 62 posters and broadsides advertising anti-war marches, United Farm Worker protests, student conferences and other cultural and political events. Another important part of the archive, organizers said, is a collection of photos, notes and other documents chronicling the founding in 1969 of the student organization Mexican American Studies Centro de Estudios, or MEChA, and the SDSU academic department now known as Chicana and Chicano studies.
