Join Maestro Jahja Ling, Music Director of San Diego Symphony and Dr. Nicolas Reveles, the Geisel Director of Education and Outreach for San Diego Opera in a discussion of the authentic Chinese folk tunes that composer Giacomo Puccini wove into the fabric of his final opera, Turandot.
Sources of these Chinese melodies, including folk tunes and music from the Imperial Court, will be discussed and you will learn how these and the use of unusual percussion instruments added to the authenticity of the score.
Examples of music from Turandot show how Puccini built his operatic score. Also learn how Puccini used his political connections to find original Chinese music.
