Eighty students and associates of San Diego Community College instructor Takashi Ijichi will exhibit original artworks in both sumi (ink) and Asian watercolors in this 9th annual show.
One of the basic tenets of Japanese brush painting is the depiction of nature in its simplest and most natural forms. This year?s theme, the Year of the Rabbit, will be highlighted in some of the artwork. Japanese culture and traditions will be showcased through displays of ikebana (traditional Japanese flower arrangements), a traditional tea ceremony, and performances by Japanese dancers and musicians in traditional dress. Highlights will include live demonstrations of brush painting by Takashi Ijichi and his advanced students, a fashion show of wearable art, and sales tables with brush-painting-related art and supplies as well as greeting cards and other crafts.
The Taka Sumi-e Society will donate a portion of art show sales to relief efforts in Japan. Collection jars for earthquake and tsunami victims will also be placed around the exhibit. Some artists are donating works with 100% of the sale price to earthquake and tsunami relief.
