The Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center presents their 36th Annual Concert of Philippine Dances and Music. The Concert is dedicated in honor of Dr. Lolita Di?oso Carter, SAMAHAN?s Founder and Executive Director, who passed away on July 25. Several of SAMAHAN?s alumni dancers and musicians, who are now successful professionals in their own field, are performing at the Concert to pay tribute.

The two-hour program of popular dances choreographed for theater performance by Artistic Director, Ruby Pearl B. Chiong, will showcase SAMAHAN's rich repertoire in vivid and colorful costumes. The exhilarating Maria Clara and Rural dances will be performed with the lively music of the Samahan Rondalla under the direction of Frederick Embalsado. In the Rural Suite, the ever popular Binasuan which SAMAHAN dancers perform with skill and joy, end with a fast paced, very creative version of the Tinikling. Tagalog songs will be performed by the Nostalgia Singers lead by Tessie Rivero Torres and Lillian Guenthoer, a Tawag ng Tanghalan champion.

The BIBAK San Diego youth group has been invited as special guest performers. They will be presenting ethnic dances and music as traditionally performed by their ancestors in the Cordilleras in the Northern Philippines, such as, Ballang-bang, An-aninit and Salisid. Samahan dances will be performing Chalichog taught by Juliet Omliwas Cheattle, a Kalinga Dance Instructor based in Seattle, WA. The Bendean and Dinuya dances are arranged by Joseph Allen Ramirez of the UCSD Kamalayan Kolective

Southern Philippine tribal dances are all performed with live music accompaniment by the Samahan Kulintang Ensemble also known as the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble, lead by Bernard Ellorin, an Ethnomusicology doctorate student at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. The ensemble is one of the very few kulintang ensembles that play the authentic music of the Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausog and Sama tribes of Mindanao in the U.S. Most of the current members of the kulintang ensemble studied Maguindanao and Maranao music under Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan, Master Artist/Teacher of Kulintang Music. Ellorin learned Tausog and Sama music from the tribal musicians in Sulu and Tawi-tawi during his trip to the southernmost islands of the Philippines for his Master?s thesis research work in 2009.

Showcased, as well, in the Mindanao suite is a choreographed version of Sagayan, a war dance of both the Maguindanaons and Maranaos of Mindanao. The colorful and distinctive headgear and skirts worn by the dancers reflect the pageantry attached to the dance which is now commonly used as entertainment in weddings and other social gatherings. A dance of the T'boli tribe will feature the authentic, intricately embroidered blouses, beaded necklaces and unique musical belts of the female dancers.
