Azerbaijan Mugham is a highly complex art form that weds classical poetry and musical improvisation in specific local modes (scales). Unlike Western modes, Mugham modes are associated not only with scales but with an orally transmitted collection of melodies and melodic phrases that performers use in the course of improvisation. The choice of a particular Mugham and and a style of performance fits a specific event. Azerbaijan Mugham is often likened to jazz improvisation. In 2003 UNESCO recognized Azerbaijan Mugham as a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." In 1977 a Azerbaijan Mugham shur was one of only 27 different songs sent into space on a "Golden Record" representing Earth's musical heritage.
