Honoring the important milestones of human development helps us to stay in touch with our own natural cycles ? as individuals, as a culture, and as a community ? and better understand that we?ve crossed a threshold and are changed from one state of being to another. Baptisms, Quincea?eras, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, graduations, marriages, retirements, and funerals are common rites of passage celebrated throughout the United States. But a closer look at San Diego?s rich variety of cultures uncovers a world of both traditional and non-traditional rites that mark our journeys through life.
Residents from throughout southeastern San Diego are coming together for this special exhibition to share their stories, artifacts, and photos of the rites they have experienced in their own lives. This amazing collection reflects the community?s diverse cultures, generations, and experiences. From Somalia?s Shaash Saar to Mexico?s Quincea?era to the scarring of a young Sudanese man?s forehead, Rites of Passage: Our Journeys Through Life provides insight into the many different ways that life?s transitions are honored and celebrated.
Alongside community residents, Balboa Park museums from the Center for Community & Cultural Arts partnership have also contributed important pieces to the collection.
