This year 2013 marks the 500th anniversary of the composition of Machiavelli?s Il principe, written over the spring and summer of 1513 after his release from prison and torture. The problem at the center of Machiavelli?s political thought in the present crisis of war and foreign intervention that had wracked Italy from the French invasions of 1494 to the Spanish victory at the Battle of Pavia in 1525 is who should rule and how they should do it.
