The world famous Rajk? Band, an authentic Gypsy ensemble from Hungary, will perform selections from their repertoire of Hungarian and Gypsy songs, classical and operetta music and will be accompanied by Hungarian dancers.
In true Roma tradition, the Rajk? will alter the program to suit the audience and the musicians? own creative mood. You?ll experience the essence of Roma music which includes spontaneity and improvisation. The instrumentation includes violin, bass, clarinet and the cimbalom, a unique instrument which mesmerized composers from Liszt and others of his time to Richard Strauss. The Rajk? Band has performed throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Asia, including a performance for Pope Benedict.
This touring ensemble derives from the renowned Rajk? school in Budapest which draws gifted young Roma musicians from throughout Central Europe for unique musical education and training starting at a very early age that concentrates on developing and preserving their cultural heritage of improvisation, an essential ingredient of their virtuosity.
The concert is co-sponsored by the House of Hungary, San Diego, and the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library. A complimentary intermission reception featuring delicious Hungarian pastries will offer an opportunity to mingle with fellow music lovers.
