African Film Celebration

A wonderful variety of films from Jamaica, Senegal, and Kenya are programmed in conjunction with the African Restaurant Week to celebrate the many facets of African culture.

In these films, witness the richness of culture from Africa and the African diaspora from a harrowing border-crossing story to a story of Rastafarian history, history of American jazz and it?s roots in African culture and music, and stories of redemption and resilience in Kenya.

Opening Night (Friday, October 18 ) Special Events:

The Pirogue

A group of African men leave Senegal in a pirogue captained by a local fisherman to undertake the treacherous crossing of the Atlantic to Spain where they believe better lives and prospects are waiting for them.

From Bolshevism to New Thought, from Gandhi to Anarchism, from Garveyism to psychoanalysis, Leonard Percival Howell sought to find his promised land. With this cocktail of ideas, Leonard ?Going? Howell returned to Jamaica and founded Pinnacle, the first Rasta community.

Youssou N?Dour, Return to Goree - October 19 - 21

A musical road movie, Return to Gor?e follows Senegalese singer Youssou N?Dour?s historical journey tracing the trail left by slaves and the jazz music they created. Youssou N?Dour?s challenge is to bring back to Africa a jazz repertoire of his own songs to perform a concert in Gor?e, the island that today symbolizes the slave trade and stands to honor its victims.

Something Necessary - October 19 & 23

The past weighs heavier for some than for others. For this Kenyan woman, a victim of political and racial violence, it is heavier than conceivable. Nor is the past that light for that Kenyan man, even though he was the culprit. They must hate each other. The story decides otherwise.
