Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
One of the greatest masterpieces of Spanish cinema, Welcome, Mr. Marshall! is an Ealing-style satire set in the era of Franco?s dictatorship in Spain in which a Castilian backwater town adopts Andalusian stereotypes to hoodwink a group of Marshall Plan representatives. Although more than 60 years have passed, this witty and compassionate classic transcends its historical context.

The event is supported by the program Spain Arts & Culture of the Embassy of Spain's Cultural Office in Washington D.C., and the lineup includes the all-time masterpiece Bienvenido Mr. Marshall (Welcome Mr. Marshall), Celda 211 (Cell 211), one of the most outstanding prison thrillers of the recent years, Una Pistola en Cada Mano (A Gun in Each Hand) an hilarious recent comedy featuring some of the best talents in Spanish and Latin American cinema, Blancanieves (Blancanieves) an imaginative reappropiation of the Snow White fairy tale, Tambi la Lluvia (Even the Rain), a smart fable establishing a comparison between European imperialism five centuries ago and modern globalization, and Pa Negre (Black Bread), contender for best foreign film Oscar awards in 2011, (Program details below)

Films from Spain aims to combine great cinema with a taste of Spainish culture -- Spaniards love casual and lively community gatherings, and the screenings will provide a perfect environment for a gathering inspired by a shared appreciation of cinema and of the Spanish way of life.
