MiraCosta College?s Theatre Department is presenting ?Once On This Island,? a musical with a nod to ?Romeo and Juliet.? The play opens February 28 at the MiraCosta College Theatre.

Directed by MiraCosta College?s Tracy Williams. The play is based on the book by Lynn Ahrens ? with music written by Stephen Flaherty ? and was nominated for eight Tony Awards. (Ahrens and Flaherty collaborated on the Tony Award?winning ?Ragtime.?) The MiraCosta College production stars Audrey Fortuin as the peasant girl Ti Moune, who falls in love with Daniel, played by Ryan Hook.

The play is a joyful island fairy tale that begins on a fictional isle in the French Antilles. The wealthy ancestors of the island?s imperialist founders inhabit one side of the island, while the residents of the other side are poverty-stricken, yet retain a great connection to the island?s mythical and mysterious gods. By chance, or perhaps by the will of the gods, two people ? one from each side of the island ? meet and fall in love.

Admission/Cost: General admission is $15, seniors/staff $12, students $10
