Beginning in the nineteenth century some Jewish scholars turned their attention to Christian texts, providing fresh and provocative insights into Jesus, Paul, and the early church. Interest in Christianity was tied to the promotion of Liberal Judaism as well as the demand for full civil and legal rights for Jews. Jews and Christians who were concerned about the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe also participated in vigorous exchanges and sought to raise public awareness about the growing problem.
