Jose Cuerda?s film views the political upheaval of 1936 Spain through the eyes of a bookish young tailor?s son. Moncho is befriended by his compassionate and liberal-minded teacher (Fernando Fernan Gomez) who opens the boy?s eyes to the wonders of the natural world. The national political ferment that looms over them threatens to disrupt their fragile relationship.
