Colorful and glittering tapestries, handwoven after designs by the most renowned artists, were the ultimate expression of status, power, taste, and wealth. As collector, heir, and patron, Louis XIV (r. 1643-1715), vastly augmented the prestigious French royal collection of tapestries. Displayed within his palaces while in residence and in outdoor courtyards on feast days, these monumental hangings embodied and proclaimed his magnificence as the Sun King.
Charissa Bremer-David is Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the J. Paul Getty Museum. She has written extensively on the Getty Museum's collection of French decorative arts on the 17th and 18th centuries, with a specialization in tapestries and textiles. Mrs. Bremer-David is the curator of Woven Gold: Tapestries of Louis XIV, a major international loan exhibition on view at the Getty Museum from December 15 until May 1, 2016.
