Welcoming the Stranger Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

Each year the Jewish community retells the Passover story as a reminder that we were once strangers in a strange land. But how are we welcoming the stranger today? Join JFS, Leichtag Foundation, and Center for Jewish Culture for a community screening of "Refugee Kids," a short documentary that follows students at a New York City summer program for children seeking asylum from the world?s most volatile conflicts. The film presents an intimate, emotionally gripping account of the students? stories of escaping war and conflict and resettling in America, chronicling their triumphs and setbacks as their lives unfold over the course of one formative summer. "Refugee Kids" humanizes complex geopolitics and depicts the challenges and urgency of immigration to America in an increasingly dangerous ? and interconnected ? world.

Director Peter Miller will be on hand to share how he literally filmed the movie through a Jewish lens. A local refugee will join Etleva Bejko, JFS Director of Refugee & Immigration Services, and Bridget de la Garza, Refugee School Impact Grant Coordinator for the San Diego Unified School District, to discuss the refugee experience in San Diego and how all of us can come together to create a welcoming community for people fleeing persecution.
