Penniless Eraste is in love with the fair Isabelle but her mother, Madame Argante, will permit the marriage only if Eraste can show he will inherit the estate of his rich but miserly Uncle Geronte. Unfortunately for Eraste, old Geronte has also fallen for the fair Isabelle, and plans to marry her and leave everything he owns to her?squashing the young love forever. Impersonating the old man and also two brash, disinherited relatives, Eraste's wily servant Crispin dictates a will favorable to his master (and to himself, of course), only to find that even the best laid plans come undone!
David Ives? adaptation is rich with flowing French couplets, and this joyful farce has everything working out in the end.
