In this talk, Dr. Brooks will explore the concept of critical memory—the collective process of preserving and connecting meaningful moments from the past to the realities of the present. He applies this framework to the history of Black sociopolitical leadership, examining how the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. has shaped understandings of Black leadership while also highlighting the important grassroots work of figures such as Prathia Hall.
Dr. Brooks will challenge simplified narratives of the Civil Rights Movement and subsequent Black freedom struggles by examining the broader networks, communities, and collective efforts that contributed to social change. The talk invites us to reconsider how we remember the past and recognize the complex histories that continue to shape sociopolitical life today.
