The El Cajon Library will welcome Newzad Brifki, founder and director of the Kurdish Community of America, for a reading from his memoir, My Journey to America: A Kurdish-American Story,. The book tells of the flight of Brifki?s family from Sadaam Hussein?s Iraq to a refugee camp in Turkey to their eventual resettlement in the United States.
A book signing will follow the visit, and books will be available for purchase. All ages are welcome. ?Finding a safe haven and having the opportunity to grow up in this country has made me the person I am today,? says Brifki. It?s important to remember ?that the United States was founded on immigration . . . We are a nation of many nations.? Librarian Phil Shopoff agreed that ?the best way to counteract ?fear of the other? is to come together in civil discourse, to listen to what each other has to say.?
