Famous opera diva Florencia Grimaldi returns home to the Amazon to perform and dreams of finding her long lost lover, a butterfly hunter who has disappeared into the jungle. As she and her fellow travelers board a steamboat and begin a magical journey down the river, the lines between fantasy and reality become enmeshed.
Experiencing powerful elements of nature merged with the supernatural, Florencia experiences an awakening, sheds her chrysalis and her spirit transforms. Inspired by the magical realism writings of Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez, Mexican composer Daniel Cat?n transports us to the mystical Amazon River with nature sounds and lush, romantic melodies reminiscent of Puccini and Debussy. SDO is proud to have been the first major opera house in the U.S. to present Catan's first opera, Rappacini's Daughter and welcomes this, the first-ever Spanish-language opera commissioned in the U.S.
