The Peace Train, working with their Mexican (Tijuana) partners, Promotora de las Bellas Artes, will stage a cross-border event they are calling Transcending Borders. Over 300 singers and supporters from both sides of the California-Mexico border are working together to build understanding, respect and friendships through the power of music. The events are part of the Centenary celebration of the life and values of Nelson Mandela.
The Peace Train's founders from South Africa, Sharon Katz and Nonhlanhla Wanda, will lead the Californian group across the border at San Ysidro, all wearing "The Peace Train's Transcending Barriers" T-shirts. They will be met in Tijuana by their Mexican counterparts from Promotora de las Bellas Artes. With support from the City of Tijuana marshals, the two groups will link arms and sing together as they parade from the border to the gorgeous performing arts building, Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT).
At CECUT, the groups will have workshops, rehearsals and a friendship meal together. Then at 6:00 PM, they will give a grand performance on the Esplanade of CECUT. Following the concert, the Californians will say "Hasta que nos encontremos de nuevo" to their new friends and travel back across the border in busses.
Note: A large group rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, July 15 at 3:00 PM at WorldBeat Cultural Center.
Individuals and groups interested in participating can send an email to . They will then be provided with the songs to learn and a schedule of rehearsals in various areas that they may join.
