Bon Odori Festival

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
The Japanese Friendship Garden (JFG) and Buddhist Temple of San Diego (BTSD) host the annual Bon Odori Festival! They are proud to continue the tradition of celebrating the circle of life together?as has been done each summer in Japan for generations?and to welcome everyone to join the celebration!

For two days you can shop from a variety of merchants, engage in family-friendly activities, and treat yourselves to Japanese festival foods, a beer garden, and a tea and dessert garden. Experience cultural performances throughout each day, which will also be highlighted with traditional Bon Odori practices.

On August 3, you'll be able to make your own toro nagashi, either to take home or set afloat at JFG. Lanterns will be sold for $10 at the Inamori Pavilion on a first come, first served basis. Lantern making kits will be available only until 5:00 PM. Lantern floating is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM at the lower garden.

On August 4, the festival will extend out to the Organ Pavilion at 4:00 PM where everyone will be invited to participate in the Bon Odori dance. The Organ Pavilion will be decorated with paper lanterns, Japanese folk tunes, and while taiko fills the air, dance leaders in traditional kimono will guide participants into a large dance circle!
