Escaping the losses of his past—his eye, his family and his self-respect among them—Nick Lutz, a former SoCal car salesman turned surf bum, spends his days in Sabanita, Mexico, chilling with his buddy Winsor in a life governed by south swells and Tecate. In Mexico, Nick sheds his former self among an eclectic group of expats and locals, who fondly name him ?Pirata? on account of his eye patch. On the beaches of Sabanita, Nick and his new buddy Winsor drink, surf, and escape. That is, until Winsor?s girlfriend, Meagan, puts the claws of a hammer into her lover?s skull. Nick helps Meagan dispose of the body, she and her two sons move into Nick?s house, and as a monsoon-season fling becomes a torrid affair, they weave their secrets and loyalties into something like a family. But when the FBI turns up looking for Nick and the local cartel gets involved, he realizes that dangerous new surprises are yet to roll in with the tide.
