WorldBeat Center?s Reggae SummerSplash and 38th Marcus Garvey Day is here. This year will be a two-day event with the first day featuring a concert, and on the second day a speaker forum honoring Marcus Mosiah & Amy Jacques Garvey. This year?s guest speakers are Jah B of the DARC Foundation, Nyabinghi Priest, Prof-I and more.

Amy Jacques Garvey (December 31, 1895 - July 25, 1973), was a journalist and activist in her own right. She was one of the pioneering Black women journalists and publishers of the 20th century. She served as the editor of the woman?s page column, ?Our Women and What They Think,? in Negro World, the UNIA?s weekly newspaper published in New York. Her editorials demonstrated her commitment to Pan-Africanism and her belief that Black women should be active in their communities even to the point of sacrifice of self.

After Garvey?s death in 1940, Jacques continued the struggle for black nationalism and African independence. In 1944 she wrote ?A Memorandum Correlative of Africa, West Indies and the Americas,? which she used to convince U.N. representatives to adopt an African Freedom Charter. She published her own book, Garvey and Garveyism, in 1963, as well as a booklet, "Black Power in America: The Power of the Human Spirit," in 1968. She also assisted John Henrik Clarke in editing Marcus Garvey and the Vision of Africa (1974).
