Join the Center for World Music for an evening of koto (Japanese zither) music with Kozue Matsumoto. After opening with an introduction to the instrument, its culture and history, the artist will guide the audience through a performance of traditional and contemporary koto music.
About Kozue Matsumoto:
Born and raised in the Tohoku area in Japan and having lived in Tokyo as well, Kozue is now based in the Los Angeles area. She has played the koto since she was three years old, having studied under Ikuta-ryu Miyagi-kai, and she holds a semi-master title. She has also played the shamisen lute and the shinobue flute since she was a child.
In North America, she has been collaborating with various musicians, dancers, visual artists and other artists. Not only does she play traditional, contemporary and experimental music, but she also improvises, composes and creates digital arts. She has performed in various projects including MicroFest, Improvisation Summit of Portland, Time-Based Art Festival, SASSAS, Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble, and The Fuse Factory Electronic and Digital Arts Lab.
