The Athenaeum?s fall jazz program at The Auditorium at TSRI concludes on Sunday, December 2, with a return by an Athenaeum favorite, Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza, in her latest trio project, The Book of Longing, featuring fellow Brazilian Chico Pinheiro on guitar and Scott Colley on bass.
In many of her recordings and past projects, Luciana Souza has paid tribute to poets and poetry ? setting to music the poems of Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda, E.E. Cummings, Gary Snyder and more recently, Leonard Cohen. For The Book of Longing, Luciana revisits some of these poets and includes new settings of poems by Leonard Cohen, Octavio Paz, Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Christina Rossetti and others.
"Poetry continues to spill into everything in my life," Luciana says. ?It has been my constant companion and I continue to be fascinated by how powerful words strung together by the mind and eye of the poet can be.?
DownBeat wrote, ?The S?o Paulo-born Souza is a master of singing in multiple genres,? ranking her ?among the world?s great singers.?
The Los Angeles Times commented on her ?inspired excellence, utter musical involvement and constant willingness, even insistence, on creative risk-taking?all reasons why a Souza performance represents a must-see and must-hear musical destination.?
Please Note: This concert is at The Auditorium at The Scripps Research Institute. This event will not take place at the Athenaeum's main location in La Jolla.
Admission/Cost: $32 - $37
