Health and Peace-building in Africa

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Bringing their expertise and in-country experience in Africa, panelists Dr. Emily Bruno and Jane Wanjiru Kinyua will explore two-key, and frequently interrelated development challenges faced by African nations: promoting health and peace.

Dr. Bruno will discuss the case for global surgery as an essential element of global health. She will examine the collaborative process of creating a National Surgical Plan for Madagascar as a case study.

Ms. Kinyua will discuss the Children Peace Initiative Kenya that has been using the friendship-for-peace model to empower children to contribute to community peace-building. The model is based on the contact theory, through which children become protagonists of their community?s peace and development. By opening doors for access to essential amenities like health facilities, enhanced trade and education, they have built bridges for their parents and communities, stimulating economic development and transforming conflict corridors into peace corridors.
