| Holo Holo Music Festival Holo Holo Music Festival was born from a love of island and reggae music—a genre deeply rooted in connection, culture, and movement. The festival first set sail in 2022 at Frost Amphitheater at Stanford University, bringing together fans to celebrate the vibrant sounds of the islands. With the spirit of holo holo—meaning "to travel, to sail, to move"—the event quickly expanded, reaching new shores in Las Vegas and Sacramento in 2023. By 2024, its journey continued with a highly anticipated stop in San Diego. Now, in 2026, we're excited to take Holo Holo even further, bringing the music and community to Oceanside, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Tacoma, San Diego, Hawai'i, Irvine, and San Jose! As we continue to move and grow, the festival remains a space for connection—where fans can gather for two days of unforgettable performances, incredible food, and the shared love of island and reggae music. Giacomo Puccini’s one-act masterpiece Il Tabarro, Italian for The Cloak, is a dramatic story of love, jealousy, and betrayal. Set aboard a river barge in Paris at the turn of the century, the soul-stirring melodies will transport you to a foggy night of deception and death. Il Tabarro is the least-performed of the three operas in Puccini’s triple-bill Il Trittico (The Triptych). While companies frequently mount double bills of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, they usually overlook “Il Tabarro,” the first opera Puccini composed in the trio. In just one hour, you’ll be spellbound by the beauty and power of this music, whether you’re a devoted opera fan or a first-timer. That’s just half of the program, though. After the intermission, you’ll see the same story told in a completely different way: through neoclassical ballet. The band name "DOES" is derived from the word for a female deer (doe). Their raw energy quickly caught the attention of major labels in Tokyo, leading to their major debut with Ki/oon Records (Sony Music) in 2006. 2007 – 2010: Breaking into the Mainstream The band skyrocketed to fame with the single "Shura," used as the ending theme for the TV anime "Gintama," debuting at No. 9 on the Oricon charts. Their 2008 single "Donten" climbed to No. 3, becoming a massive hit with over 200,000 digital downloads—a rare feat for a rock band at the time. | 6:00 PM | Book Talk: Under The Perfect Sun Twenty years after "Under the Perfect Sun" was first published, authors Kelly Mayhew and Jim Miller return for a special anniversary conversation at the San Diego History Center on August 6, 2026, at 6 p.m. Originally coauthored with the late Mike Davis, the book examines the city’s history of militarization, economic inequality, corruption, racial injustice, and political transformation, while highlighting the activists and communities who challenged entrenched power. This updated and expanded anniversary edition revisits San Diego’s evolution from a conservative stronghold to a more progressive city still shaped by ongoing struggles over gentrification, labor, and social justice. Kelly Mayhew is a writer, editor, oral historian, and founding member of San Diego City Works Press and teaches English, Humanities, Labor Studies, and Gender Studies at San Diego City College. Jim Miller has published poetry, fiction, and nonfiction in a wide range of journals and other publications, and teaches English, Humanities, and Labor Studies at San Diego City College.
