| 6:30 PM | Carnaval of New Latinx Musicals The Latinx Theatre Commons Carnaval of New Latinx Musicals is headed to San Diego in August 2026, produced in partnership with UC San Diego Department of Theatre & Dance, La Jolla Playhouse and Tuyo Theatre. Join us for the pachanga! The Carnaval features concert readings of four new musicals that are free for everyone to attend at UC San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater. Readings are free, but RSVPs are requested. Carnaval will be an exuberant celebration of Latinx experiences, music and storytelling, uplifting musical theatre writers, composers, lyricists, directors, and music directors. It will bring together theatremakers and theatre decision makers from across the nation to amplify, illuminate, and forward Latinx musical theatre. What does Latinx mean? Latinx is a gender neutral term in place of identifiers such as Latino, Latina or Latin@. The term seeks to reject gender binaries and move towards inclusion that recognizes the intersecting identities of Latin American descendants.

| Music: Sabrosas Latin Orchestra Sabrosas Latin Orchestra, San Diego’s first and only all-female salsa band and a 501(c)(3) organization, is celebrating five years of community, music, and fun in 2024. Founded after identifying a unique opportunity to unite as female musicians, the band brings a shared love of salsa and Latin music to audiences throughout Southern California. With a commitment to serving the community, Sabrosas partners with local schools through mentorship programs as well as organizations like the San Diego Latino Film Festival and San Diego Pride, enlivening the cultural landscape. Sabrosas is proud to have performed at venues such as Cafe Sevilla, the Belly Up, NAMM, and numerous community festivals. Looking ahead, the band is focusing on writing and recording original music, and of course, will continue to inspire and entertain, reinforcing their dedication to bringing Latin music to audiences of all ages.

| Music: Around the World in Song Join us for an entertaining afternoon while supporting Osher's Theater World, a talented group of theater artists. Comprised of members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego, Theater World brings engaging performances to audiences throughout the year, and your attendance helps sustain future productions and creative opportunities for lifelong learners. This event, inspired by Fran Zimmerman and directed by Herb Hein, will feature 18 songs from around the world performed by an ensemble of singers with piano, drums, guitar, and accordion. Local downtown restaurants will provide some small international delights starting at 1pm. There will be limited parking available at the venue for $10, but it is recommended that you take the Blue Line Trolley, which stops right across the street from the venue. You will receive a link to purchase parking in your registration confirmation email. Registration is $25 for this fundraising event and includes admission to the concert and light refreshments. It does not include parking or public transportation. Theater World brings Osher members together to explore the joy of performance through acting, directing, and storytelling. Whether discovering new talents or building on previous experience, participants develop creative skills, form lasting friendships, and enrich the Osher community by entertaining fellow members throughout the year.

| 5:00 PM | Food: Chinese Pulled Noodles In this hands-on class, students will learn the art of traditional Chinese pulled noodles (lā miàn) alongside the preparation of a versatile “mother sauce” that forms the backbone of countless noodle dishes. Participants will explore dough development, gluten structure, and the rhythmic pulling technique that transforms a simple mixture of flour, water, and salt into long, elastic strands of noodles. The class culminates in assembling a complete dish, pairing freshly pulled noodles with a deeply flavored, adaptable sauce. Chinese pulled noodles trace their origins back over 4,000 years, with early evidence found during the Han Dynasty. Lā miàn, meaning “pulled noodles,” became especially prominent in Northern China, where wheat-based foods dominate. Over time, noodle-making evolved into both a culinary craft and a performance art, with skilled chefs stretching dough into hundreds of strands in a matter of seconds. The concept of a “mother sauce” reflects a broader Chinese cooking philosophy: mastering foundational sauces allows for endless variation across regional cuisines.

| 4:00 PM | Exhibit: Future Flowers Multi-disciplinary artist and muralist Thao Huynh French was recently commissioned to create two murals for San Diego Mesa College’s KUP Village in the Student Services building. Thao and her husband founded Mindful Murals and they have painted over 400 murals. Born in Vietnam and raised in California, Thao’s artistic practice is heavily influenced by her Asian American heritage, her experience as a refugee, and an appreciation for nature, particularly flowers, which she considers symbols of resilience and transformation. "Future Flowers: Memory, Meaning, Mischief" is Thao’s debut solo exhibition and it features paintings, interactive installations and archival materials on the theme of refugee history and experiences while providing a place for sharing and connection. The exhibit also delves into Asian American life, cultural memory and nostalgia, which Thao interprets through the use of traditional Vietnamese dresses, Lunar New Year customs and decorations, immigrant food, lively pop culture, and even conflict. We invite you to join us for the reception on Wednesday, September 2, 4 - 7 p.m. Meet the artist, enjoy refreshments and a performance by Southern Sea.

| Asian American Dance Festival Join us in City Heights on Saturday, September 5th from 11am - 4pm for San Diego's Asian American Dance Festival (AADF) Community Day! This year's AADF2026 Community Day invites local AAPI student and community artists to share short dance pieces alongside cultural dance troupes. The goal is to make sure that the broad diversity of the Asian American and Pacific Islander diaspora are represented and celebrated. Dance artists are also invited to offer classes from the stage for audiences to participate in. Taking place at City Heights Performance Annex Open-Air Theater and the adjacent Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, organizations and businesses are welcome to set-up booths to distribute information and offer family friendly activities.

Lowrider bikes are often the first vehicle through which youth express their individuality, cultural pride, and sense of belonging. Each bike carries with it the legacy of those who built, rode, and shared it, embodying the values that continue to sustain lowrider culture today. This exhibition brings together a display of lowrider bikes, contemporary artists, photographers, and special contributions of archival photo collections from local San Diego bike club chapters. Chrome and "Candy Dreams" honors the living heritage of the lowrider bike as a powerful rite of passage for generations of youth.

| House of Lebanon Lawn Program Each year, House of Lebanon San Diego hosts its annual Lawn Program in Balboa Park. Entertainment is provided by a variety of folk dance groups performing traditional Lebanese dances in regional attire. In addition to folkloric performances, local Lebanese artists present traditional music, songs, and poetry that reflect Lebanon’s rich cultural heritage. House of Lebanon San Diego offers a wide selection of traditional Lebanese meza, including hummus, tabouli, spinach pies, kibbeh, falafel, stuffed grape leaves, moussakaa, kafta, and chicken and lamb shawarma. | 7:30 PM | Music: Black Uhuru Derrick “Duckie” Simpson the “Gong Gong Gullie” is the founder and leader for reggae’s BLACK UHURU. Although going through numerous lead singers and musicians they have remained to be one of the most recognized and prolific reggae band for over 45 years. The Group’s line up is Duckie Simpson, Andrew Bees, and Elsa Green. The roots of BLACK UHURU were formed in Kingston Jamaica’s Waterhouse district also known as “Firehouse” in the early 60′s. Though considered to be one of Jamaica’s toughest neighbourhoods it’s home to several other reggae singers and musicians. It was where Duckie Simpson grew up and learned to sing from boyhood friends Winston “Pipe” Matthews and Lloyd “Bread” McDonald of Wailing Souls and Bob Marley. He recorded four tracks with Wailing Souls before forming his own group.

In recent years, A.CHAL has entered a deeper and more personal chapter: a direct reconnection with his Peruvian identity, his spirituality, and the popular sounds that shaped his origins. His current universe blends the street, migration, desire, roots, and mysticism, creating a body of work that moves naturally between the global and the deeply Latin American. Today, A.CHAL is experiencing one of the most honest and well-defined moments of his career. Rather than trying to fit into the mainstream, he is creating his own language from displacement, memory, and Peruvian pride. In May 2026, Rolling Stone en Español described him as an artist who has transformed the experience of living between worlds into a unique sonic identity, shaped by cumbia, chicha, and his roots.
