| 10:30 AM | Film: Home Away From Home Join us for a screening of the documentary Home Away from Home, which provides an intimate look at the work of South Korean artist Do Ho Suh. Renowned for his “suitcase architecture,” Suh uses hand-stitched silk and translucent fabrics to create 1:1 scale replicas of the homes he has lived in across the globe. By recreating these intimate spaces, he explores themes of displacement, memory, and the emotional weight of the structures we inhabit. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition India Thompson: Looks Like Home, the film offers a compelling parallel to Thompson’s own exploration of domesticity and the “unpacking” of rented spaces through woven sculpture. Following the screening, join the artist and curator Ariana Torres for an exhibition tour of Looks Like Home to further discuss the labor-intensive crafts both artists use to document the intangible energy of home.

| 10:00 AM | Talk: Poisoned Waters For decades, the Tijuana River watershed has served as a vital ecological and community resource connecting communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Today, however, the region faces a growing environmental and public health crisis as untreated sewage, industrial pollutants, and contaminated stormwater flow through the watershed and into coastal communities. The impacts are far-reaching. Beach closures, public health concerns, environmental degradation, economic losses, and strained cross-border relationships have affected residents, businesses, and ecosystems throughout the San Diego-Tijuana region. While the challenges are significant, they also underscore the need for innovative solutions, regional cooperation, and sustained binational engagement. Join the San Diego World Affairs Council for a timely discussion exploring one of the most pressing transboundary issues facing our region today. Poisoned Waters: The Tijuana River Crisis and the Future of Cross-Border Cooperation will bring together leaders and experts from both sides of the border to examine the crisis from environmental, public health, community, economic, and binational perspectives. Together, panelists will explore the root causes of the crisis, the impacts on affected communities, current efforts to address the problem, and opportunities for greater collaboration among government agencies, community organizations, researchers, and residents. The conversation will also consider what the future of cross-border cooperation can and should look like as the region works toward long-term solutions. Umeboshi (梅干) is salted Japanese pickled plums. Packed with umami, saltiness, and subtle floral aromas, these little morsels pack a mighty flavorful punch! In Part 2, we will separate the plums from the liquid (umeshu), dry them for a few days before jarring them up again for a longer cure. Dlan Dary was born in Al-Hasakah, Syria. Although Dlan is blind, he was recognized for his talent on the buzuq, a long-necked fretted lute, and first appeared on national TV at age 6. Largely self-taught, Dlan plays more than eight instruments—including the buzuq, bağlama, oud, darbuka, and tanbūra. He also sings in Kurdish, Arabic, and English.

The band name "DOES" is derived from the word for a female deer (doe). Their raw energy quickly caught the attention of major labels in Tokyo, leading to their major debut with Ki/oon Records (Sony Music) in 2006. 2007 – 2010: Breaking into the Mainstream The band skyrocketed to fame with the single "Shura," used as the ending theme for the TV anime "Gintama," debuting at No. 9 on the Oricon charts. Their 2008 single "Donten" climbed to No. 3, becoming a massive hit with over 200,000 digital downloads—a rare feat for a rock band at the time. In 2009, they appeared in the blockbuster film Crows Zero II (directed by Takashi Miike), where they performed on screen. Explore the rich history and cultural significance of Kumeyaay rock art in this engaging, hands-on workshop. Participants will learn how pictographs and petroglyphs were used to record stories, share knowledge, mark important places, and express connections to the natural world. Through guided discussion, attendees will examine traditional rock art designs and their meanings before creating their own pictograph on stone to take home.
