We invite you to take part in our Varenyky Making Day, dedicated to preparing traditional Ukrainian dumplings. It’s a volunteer effort to support the House of Ukraine. Together, we will make varenyky that will be sold during Ukrainian Festival in Balboa Park, to raise funds for our organization. About the Dish: Varenyky are traditional Ukrainian dumplings made from unleavened dough with various fillings such as potato, cheese, sauerkraut, mushrooms, or fruit. They are typically served with sour cream or fried onions — a comforting symbol of Ukrainian hospitality.

| 8:00 PM | Music: DOES 2003 – 2006: Formation and Major Debut Formed in Fukuoka by Wataru Ujihara (Vocals & Guitar), Yasushi Akatsuka (Bass & Chorus), and Kesaku Morita (Drums & Chorus). The band name "DOES" is derived from the word for a female deer (doe). Their raw energy quickly caught the attention of major labels in Tokyo, leading to their major debut with Ki/oon Records (Sony Music) in 2006. 2007 – 2010: Breaking into the Mainstream The band skyrocketed to fame with the single "Shura," used as the ending theme for the TV anime "Gintama," debuting at No. 9 on the Oricon charts. Their 2008 single "Donten" climbed to No. 3, becoming a massive hit with over 200,000 digital downloads—a rare feat for a rock band at the time. In 2009, they appeared in the blockbuster film Crows Zero II (directed by Takashi Miike), where they performed on screen. Director Miike praised the band, saying, "DOES is a band of beautiful, stripped-down honesty." Their 2010 smash hit "Bakuchi Dancer" sold over 100,000 physical copies and remained in the Top 10 for three consecutive weeks. 2011 – 2016: Global Recognition and Hiatus During this period, DOES continued to dominate the anime scene, providing themes for Space Brothers ("Yumemiru Sekai") and NARUTO Shippuden ("Guren"). They celebrated their 10th anniversary with sold-out tours and the release of their self-titled 6th album DOES. | 11:00 AM | Talk: Journey of a Persian Carpet As part of Maryam Bayat: Unrolling Paradise, this free public program offers a welcoming introduction to the art and history of Persian carpets through film, conversation, and hands-on making. Families and visitors of all ages are invited to explore the journey of a Persian carpet, from design and wool preparation to dyeing and weaving, and to learn more about the skill, tradition, and imagination carried in each work. The program features a short educational talk alongside screenings of two animated films by acclaimed Iranian artist and animator Noureddin Zarrinkelk, The Little Prince and the Magic Carpet and Amir Hamzeh. Her research and artistic practice merge traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques with contemporary environments. Imafuku's scholarly work includes the historic revival of ancient purple dyeing methods—a complex, time-honored process she has recreated and exhibited internationally. This exhibition features works created specifically for this exhibition using natural plant-based materials, as well as various works in katazome, a traditional Japanese stencil dyeing technique. In this hands-on workshop, you will use Japanese pigment watercolor paint called "Gansai" and premium washi postcards from the long-established Kyoto washi shop "Kyukyodo" as your canvas. Using a delicate stencil pattern carved by traditional craftsmen, you will create one to three original postcard-sized works. After the workshop, you can take your finished postcards and a mini hanging scroll home.
