| 10:00 AM | Talk: Poisoned Waters For decades, the Tijuana River watershed has served as a vital ecological and community resource connecting communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Today, however, the region faces a growing environmental and public health crisis as untreated sewage, industrial pollutants, and contaminated stormwater flow through the watershed and into coastal communities. The impacts are far-reaching. Beach closures, public health concerns, environmental degradation, economic losses, and strained cross-border relationships have affected residents, businesses, and ecosystems throughout the San Diego-Tijuana region. While the challenges are significant, they also underscore the need for innovative solutions, regional cooperation, and sustained binational engagement. Join the San Diego World Affairs Council for a timely discussion exploring one of the most pressing transboundary issues facing our region today. Poisoned Waters: The Tijuana River Crisis and the Future of Cross-Border Cooperation will bring together leaders and experts from both sides of the border to examine the crisis from environmental, public health, community, economic, and binational perspectives. Together, panelists will explore the root causes of the crisis, the impacts on affected communities, current efforts to address the problem, and opportunities for greater collaboration among government agencies, community organizations, researchers, and residents. The conversation will also consider what the future of cross-border cooperation can and should look like as the region works toward long-term solutions. As San Diego and Tijuana continue to grow as an interconnected binational region, the health of the Tijuana River watershed serves as a powerful reminder that many of our greatest challenges—and opportunities—do not stop at the border.

| Umeboshi (Japanese Pickled Plums) Workshop In this two part hands-on workshop (separated by 1 month), you will learn to make umeboshi, traditionally cured Japanese pickled plums! Umeboshi (梅干) is salted Japanese pickled plums. Packed with umami, saltiness, and subtle floral aromas, these little morsels pack a mighty flavorful punch! In Part 2, we will separate the plums from the liquid (umeshu), dry them for a few days before jarring them up again for a longer cure. Includes your own take-home jar of umeboshi (ready next year) as well as samples of finished umeboshi and umeboshi-flavored dishes

Just as she receives the call that could change her career, she’s pulled back to her childhood home, where she’s once again the “disappointing” daughter of her Asian immigrant parents, still haunted by an unresolved secret. Mia must learn to use her voice to confront and heal from the past. In 2017, MILCK and AG’s “Quiet” became a viral sensation around the world as an anthem of the Women’s March. That same spirit inspired them and acclaimed playwright Sam Chanse to draw on each of their personal stories to create The Family Album, a humorous and poignant original musical about finding and reclaiming your voice and using it for change. Commissioned by La Jolla Playhouse, The Family Album features a soulful power-pop score by MILCK and AG. Explore the rich history and cultural significance of Kumeyaay rock art in this engaging, hands-on workshop. Participants will learn how pictographs and petroglyphs were used to record stories, share knowledge, mark important places, and express connections to the natural world. Through guided discussion, attendees will examine traditional rock art designs and their meanings before creating their own pictograph on stone to take home. As a special bonus, each participant will receive a complimentary copy of La Rumorosa Rock Art Along the Border by Don Liponi, offering a deeper look into the fascinating rock art traditions found along the border region.
