Dance: Las Mariposas

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Eveoke opens season with dance theatre production inspired by Julia Alvarez's novel In the Time of the Butterflies.

Fifty years ago on November 25, 1960 three sisters known as ?the butterflies? were brutally murdered for their participation in the resistance movement against Rafael Trujillo?s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. A fourth sister survived and chose to share their story of courage, conviction, and compassion.

Using magical realism, modern dance, and text from the novel, Eveoke?s Las Mariposas enters the story through the eyes and the heart of the surviving sister, Ded? Mirabal. Ded? introduces us to her three sisters, Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa, each with their own distinct personality and passionate focus. Throughout the show we experience key moments in their lives as young women, witnessing the circumstances and choices that led them to participate in their country?s revolution. As Ded? leads us through her family?s story, she becomes the universal storyteller of the violence and oppression experienced by so many women under countless dictatorships. Las Mariposas explores the ability to move forward out of tragedy, the necessity of forgiveness even in atrocity, and the power of one woman?s voice to effect change in her nation. Las Mariposas is a reminder of our collective responsibility to listen to the stories and inherent lessons of previous generations and commit to creating a more just world, not only for women, but for everyone.
